Microsoft is giving Windows on Arm PCs that use a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip the ability to download and play games locally via the Xbox app and a Game Pass subscription, rather than in the cloud.
Now, Microsoft is testing a way to enable local gaming via the Xbox app on Windows on Arm PCs. You’ve always been able to game on a PC running with Windows on Arm, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite processor inside. But if you loaded up the Xbox app on a Windows PC, the only way to do so was via cloud gaming, not locally.Microsoft now has a new update (version 2508.1001.27.0 and higher) for those who are both Windows Insiders and Xbox Insiders enrolled in the PC Gaming Preview on their Arm-based Windows 11 PCs, via the Xbox Insider Hub. (That’s probably not a lot of users.) If you and your PC meet those requirements, you should be able to download an updated version of the Xbox app allowing you to try out games via the Windows Store and Xbox Game Pass for PC.The latter is what makes this update important. Game Pass allows those who pay a monthly fee to take advantage of an ever-changing pantheon of games, both top-tier and independent offerings. To date, Windows on Arm “gamers” have had to use Valve’s Steam instead.Still, the Xbox app is now a pretty convenient way to download games via Microsoft’s Game Pass, so the addition is good news. We’ll simply have to wait for what we expect to be a next-gen Snapdragon to be launched at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Technology Summit at the end of September for even better gaming on Windows on Arm.

Prior to launch, Qualcomm had been bizarrely bullish about the platforms PC gaming performance, with claims that native Windows games would "just work" on the Snapdragon setup. Now we're eight months down the line post-launch, how do those claims look at the start of 2025? ... Windows on Arm gamers will be able to download Xbox app games locally but cloud gaming might still be a better optionThis means we're stuck with integrated graphics, and we all know how well that usually works—don't go expecting 4K or high frame rates from complex 3D games. But that's not to say chips with integrated graphics are a complete loss. As we saw when we tried gaming on an M3-equipped MacBook Air last year, the new generation of ARM-based processors are perfectly capable of running games, in the same way that your smartphone or tablet is.Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team. What matters is that these are not dedicated gaming platforms, especially in the GPU department and, when it comes to the ARM-based chips, many games still don't have executables optimised for the new platform, relying on software translation layers to run. With Qualcomm, however, we do have Microsoft support in the shape of Windows-on-ARM (WoA). That means we can run the Snapdragon silicon in an entirely familiar Windows environment; one that uses a compatibility layer, called Prism, to ensure wide support of applications for even those programs (and games) without native ARM support.
Microsoft's Strategic Expansion of Gaming on Arm-based Windows 11 PCs: A Catalyst for Arm's High-Performance Computing Future
Microsoft's 2025 updates to the Xbox PC app and Windows 11 24H2 have unlocked unprecedented gaming capabilities on Arm-based devices. The ability to download and run locally installed games—previously restricted to cloud streaming—has been enabled by Prism, a next-generation emulation engine. These devices combine Arm's energy efficiency with Microsoft's AI and cloud capabilities, creating a hybrid model where local gaming and cloud streaming coexist. For instance, while high-end AAA titles may still rely on Xbox Cloud Gaming, mid-tier and indie games can now run natively, offering users flexibility without compromising portability. The collaboration with Unity to natively support the Unity Game Engine on Arm is equally significant. By enabling developers to create and optimize games for Arm-based platforms, Microsoft is fostering a self-sustaining ecosystem.Emulation still lags behind native x86 performance for CPU-intensive games, and anti-cheat compatibility issues persist for niche titles. However, Microsoft's roadmap—featuring deeper Prism integration, AI-driven performance optimizations, and partnerships with NVIDIA—addresses these risks. Additionally, the growing trend of software vendors (e.g., Adobe, Autodesk) porting applications to Arm64 reinforces the platform's long-term viability.

All of Arm’s neural technology will be completely open – that means the model architecture, the weights and the tools that a studio would need to retrain the model. Partners that have shown support for the development kit to date include Enduring Games, Epic Games (Unreal Engine), NetEase Games, Sumo Digital, Tencent Games, and Traverse Research. This marks the arrival of desktop-quality neural graphics on mobile, a major milestone for game developers on the frontlines of the shift to on-device AI. But Arm neural technology isn’t just about games – it will have an impact in applications such as neural camera workloads, giving developers the tools to bring graphics to life, on-device and at scale in use cases ranging from upscaling to path tracing.Leveraging all the pieces of the development kit is Arm Neural Super Sampling (NSS) – our AI-powered graphics upscaling engine. It builds on the foundation laid by Arm Accuracy Super Resolution (Arm ASR), which is already being leveraged by the studios behind games including Fortnite and Infinity Nikki.By giving developers a unified, open platform, we’re making it easier to deploy AI across the full range of on-device experiences, built on Arm. · “Enduring Games and Arm share a vision for empowering developers with greater control, performance and content quality – regardless of device.

Microsoft has announced an update to the Xbox app that enables the ability to download Xbox PC games on Arm-based devices, while also committing to improving gaming on Arm devices as a whole.
Xbox and gaming on Windows on ARM PCs is set to gain some big improvements in the coming months, which could help devices like the Surface Pro 11 (with Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite). (Image credit: Daniel Rubino) Microsoft has announced a new preview update for the Xbox app on Windows 11 today that introduces support for downloading Xbox PC games on Arm-based Windows 11 devices such as those powered by the Snapdragon X system on a chip (SoC).While users on Arm-based devices have always been able to download games from third-party storefronts like Steam and Origin, the Xbox app had removed the ability to do so, only offering the ability to stream games via Xbox Cloud Gaming to users. This block was frustrating, as while a number of games do fail to run on Arm-based PCs, a lot of them don't, and a lot of the games in the Microsoft Store should run on Windows on Arm PCs with little to no issues. In addition to the added capability of downloading games locally, Microsoft has also announced that it's working on a number of features and improvements for Windows 11 that are designed to improve the gaming experience on Arm-based PCs.

Arm Joe, also known as ArmJoe, is a free 2D one-on-one fighting dōjin game based on the Les Misérables musical. It was made by Takase using 2D Fighter Maker (2D格闘ツクール95, 2D Kakutō Tsukūru 95), an engine developed by OUTBACK (OUTBACK) and edited by ASCII (アスキー, Asuki).According to a Something Awful review, Judgement (the final boss and most powerful character) is as unbalanced as being thrown in jail for stealing a loaf of bread.[7] However, the author admits to not being a fan of fighting games except for the Super Smash Bros. series, and not knowing how to do a hadouken in Street Fighter 2. TimW of indiegames.com was also unusually unimpressed, saying "Arm Joe features inconsistent sprite design and unbalanced gameplay issues, among other glaring problems.[8] Certain characters depend on slide moves to win, while others have a special attack that could drain the entire life gauge in mere seconds." and "The final boss is impossible to beat, which is understandable since by using Judgment a player can actually complete the game by pressing a single button repeatedly."One commenter claimed that it was a parody of fighting games and should not be judged on its balance issues: "I personally like to think of ArmJoe more as a parody of fighting games: over the top super moves, incredibly difficult boss, and the very obvious references to other games make it hard for me to think otherwise."Arm Joe, also known as ArmJoe, is a free 2D one-on-one fighting dōjin game based on the Les Misérables musical.[1]

ARM hardware on Windows has received many updates and can now run many games, but its performance still requires further improvement.
The Windows ARM laptop launched a year ago and had some of the worst software support. Many games and other applications now launch and work fine, though the performance figures are still not great. Now, since it’s an ARM-based CPU, it’s highly efficient for sure. Though its performance is still questionable even after a year of release. According to Dawid from Dawid Does Tech Stuff, when he tested the laptop a year ago, it could barely launch anything, let alone the running part. Mainstream games such as CS2, ARK Survival, Starfield, Helldivers 2, and Doom Eternal simply refused to launch except for a few titles, as shown in his video. This is basically a translation layer to help run the x86-based software on ARM hardware. The update brings support for crucial CPU extensions such as AVX, AVX2, F16C, BMI, and FMA. The biggest achievement here would be the AVX2 instruction set support, as it’s a prerequisite for modern gaming nowadays. ... Furthermore, Microsoft has also dropped native support for the Xbox PC App to let players install games locally onto their systems directly from the Xbox PC App.This is a big step up from the previous state, where you were only allowed to stream games via cloud on the Xbox PC app. However, it’s still a work-in-progress, so you’ll have to join the insider program, as it will take some time before going public. With the new CPU extensions support in place, the ARM processor now runs every game that it previously refused to launch at all.
Epic Games has introduced Easy Anti-Cheat support for ARM-based Windows and Linux devices, unlocking a massive library of games for ARM gamers that explicitly rely on EAC to protect gamers against cheating.
Epic Games issued new patch notes highlighting Windows and Linux support for EOS 1.17.1.3-CL44532354, and instructions for game developers to update EAC to the latest version. Some other anti-cheat programs have already added support for Windows on ARM; however, Easy Anti-Cheat is one of the most popular anti-cheat engines used by video games today, and adding EAC will introduce compatibility for a plethora of titles.Anti-cheat apps require extra tooling to work on ARM, and for Windows specifically, anti-cheat tools also need to work with Microsoft's Prism x86 to ARM compatibility tool. ... However, Easy Anti-Cheat is just one of several anti-cheat programs used by game engines today.EAC is one of the most popular anti-cheat applications and will make many games compatible with ARM devices; however, there are a variety of other anti-cheat programs used by many more games, including Riot Vanguard, Faceit, and Javelin, that will need to support ARM before anti-cheat incompatibility issues are entirely left behind. So far, only Easy Anti-Cheat, Battleye, Denuvo, and Wellbia Uncheater are supported on ARM versions of Windows 11. Today's update from Epic also brings official Nintendo Switch 2 support: "This release adds support for Nintendo Switch 2. You can extend your game’s existing EOS SDK for Switch integration to run on Nintendo’s latest hardware with minimal changes," the release note states.

Just like Apple did in 2020, many other PC makers are also trying to switch from Intel processors to ARM...
Analysts say that gamers account for around 15% of laptop users worldwide, moving “tens of billions of dollars in business each year.” While Macs are more popular in the productivity segment, Windows has always been known for being a more open platform for games. But the move from x86 to ARM might change that.Similar to macOS, the ARM version of Windows also has a technology that translates x86 software to ARM, so that users can run apps and games that haven’t yet been updated to run natively on the new architecture.Specialists claim that one of the causes of such bugs is the software built into the code to prevent cheating, which has become essential for online games. “Even if the game itself can be translated to run on Arm, the anti-cheating software may be incompatible,” the report says.Let’s just hope this advantage turns into great games for macOS. View all comments · Qualcomm, which is behind the ARM chips powering the latest Windows PCs, says it’s working with game developers to ensure better compatibility, but embracing the small number of ARM PC users doesn’t seem to be a priority for most of them at the moment.
Epic Games has finally brought Easy Anti-Cheat to Windows 11 Arm, a move that will make many popular games, including Fortnite, playable on the platform.
An increasing number of software vendors are now offering native Arm64 versions of their applications, ensuring a smoother, more efficient user experience—eschewing the need to rely on compatibility layers that emulate Arm64 on x86 architectures. In the gaming sphere, adaptation has been more complex, largely due to kernel-level anti-cheat systems. If these anti-cheat solutions lack compatibility, any games that rely on them remain inaccessible to Windows 11 Arm users.Epic had initially pledged to enable EAC compatibility for Arm devices by March 2025. Though delayed, the company has now delivered—making available the updated SDK (software development kit) that enables game developers to integrate EAC support.Several of Epic’s own hit titles use EAC, and with compatibility now in place, the company is preparing to release an Arm-native version of Fortnite, allowing Windows 11 Arm players to enjoy the game seamlessly.Other high-profile games that leverage EAC include Apex Legends, PUBG, and Elden Ring. It is highly likely that their developers will now move forward with adaptation efforts, signaling a potential surge in the vibrancy of the Windows 11 Arm gaming ecosystem.
